What are the different animal models? (Summary)
The animal models involved with studying and modeling Alzheimer's disease are rodents and monkey. In the animal models, plaque buildups: deposition of amyloid-beta peptide of the brain occurs, and this is a key characteristic of Alzheimer's disease. By modeling this buildup of plaque in animal models, researchers are able to study the plaque and test treatments. Mice are used as models for Alzheimer's disease since they are cheap and genetically modified mice that develop the symptoms of Alzheimer's are available. Monkeys are another model used for Alzheimer's disease since they naturally develop the plaque in their brains.
